The phrase EURoeSeparation of Church and StateEUR? comes from a letter that Thomas Jefferson wrote to the Danbury Baptists in Jan, 1, 1802. The Danbury congregation heard a widespread rumor that the Congregationalists, another denomination, were to become the national religion. This was very alarming to them, because the knew of the religious persecution in England. So the congregation wrote a letter to Thomas Jefferson addressing this issue. He then returned a letter :
